RCL-290 is a pocket cassette player of a doubtful brand produced in 1980s. Jan Faix bought it for a bargain at a junk shop and decided to explore the player’s sound possibilities. He was pleasantly surprised by its flexibility and colourfulness. The recording of this “instrument” was similar to that used by contemporary improvisers playing classical music instruments during their solo performances, i.e. live, without overdubbing or additional sound effects, and, indeed, without the use of magnetic tape. The resulting recording can also be viewed as a “vivisection” performed on this piece of electronic junk, or as a rather light-hearted contribution to the otherwise serious discussion about the further use of the hardly decomposable waste.

Count Portmon is a solo project of a Prague-based musician, teacher and journalist Jan Faix. Jan plays the piano and the synthesiser in various bands of diverse music genres, be it in the avant-garde rock Unifiction, or the numerous electro-acoustic improvisation projects, such as Tembryo trio, the international ÖNCZkekvist Orchestra, earlier also the Noise Pictures of Boris Gagloev. Under the pseudonym of Count Portmon, Jan focuses primarily on experimental electronic music.
